“Maternal mental health, also known as perinatal mental health, is a [person’s] overall emotional, social, and mental well-being during and after pregnancy” (Zuloaga, 2020). It refers to a person’s (more frequently the mother) well-being during, and up to 2-years after birth.

Data indicates that 1 in 5 women will experience perinatal mental health symptoms, while 70% will underplay mental health challenges during this period. Treating maternal mental health is a public health priority as suicide is the leading cause of maternal death after the first year of birth. Furthermore, maternal mental health has a direct impact on the child’s developmental adjustment and emotional well-being. (Maternal Mental Health Alliance, 2025)

The Hispanic/Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence provides support for behavioral health providers working with Latino communities in need of services for maternal and child health and mental health. The Center has provided webinars, trainings, and developed educational resources on perinatal mental health, paternal health, family heath, and culturally responsive approaches. Perinatal Mood and Anxiety disorders: Supporting Latino Communities

While motherhood is culturally perceived as a ‘happy’ period in life, there are several mental health conditions that may present during pregnancy and postpartum. These are identified under the term Perinatal Mood and Anxiety disorders (PMADs). Up to 1 in 5 women will suffer from a mental health disorder like postpartum depression and less than 15% will receive treatment. Given the social determinants of health affecting Latinos, they may be at a higher risk for developing symptoms. PMADs have an adverse effect on mothers, fathers/partners, mother–infant interactions, and infant outcomes, which makes early detection and treatment essential for the overall well-being of families.    Objectives   Introduce and define concepts related to perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). Discuss the importance of increasing awareness of PMADs in the general public and mental health professionals. Provide resources for clinicians and other mental health service providers that might be helpful in providing culturally responsive mental health services during the perinatal period.
