Reducing Maternal and Infant Risk: Clinical Approaches That Work (1:00pm ET)

May 6 | 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

This event will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation available in Spanish.

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are mental health conditions that can occur during pregnancy and up to a year after childbirth, affecting emotional well-being and daily functioning. Up to 1 in 5 women will suffer from a mental health disorder such as postpartum depression, and less than 15% will receive treatment. Among Latinas, social drivers of health may increase the risk for PMADs, which may result in adverse effects on mothers, fathers/partners, mother–infant interactions, and infant outcomes.

Untreated PMADs can place infants at increased risk for challenges in early bonding and attachment, difficulties with feeding and sleep regulation, developmental delays, and altered emotional and behavioral patterns. Early identification and treatment are therefore essential to promoting healthy outcomes for both mother and baby.

Collaborative, integrated care models are especially effective for Latinas with PMADs because they reduce barriers, center cultural values, and provide coordinated, holistic support for the entire family. This webinar will discuss how collaborative, integrated care is particularly effective for Latino families. The presenter will identify Latino cultural values and demonstrate how they can be incorporated into care to increase engagement and improve outcomes for mothers and infants.

Objectives:

-Define perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs)
-Identify risk factors that impact the health of mothers and infants
-Present collaborative integrated care models to promote wellness in Latinas during the perinatal period
