Navigating Hispanic, Latino/a/e/x Terminology in Research, Community, and Practice

January 28 | 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Are you looking for guidance on how to navigate the different terms used to describe the Hispanic or Latino community?  Join the National Research Center on Hispanic Children & Families (Center) and the Hispanic/Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence , for a webinar discussion designed to help researchers, practitioners, and organizations better understand and navigate diverse terminology when engaging with Latine communities.
Usage and preference around terms such as Hispanic, Latino/a, Latinx, and Latine have evolved over time and stem from a complex history. Our panelists Dr. Lina Guzman, Center principal investigator; Dr. Hanner Hernández, Hispanic/Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence Steering Committee member; and Dr. Patricia Foxen, National Legal Aid & Defender Association director of community research will discuss this history and provide practical examples on how to navigate the nuance that comes with the different terms used to describe the Hispanic population.
Webinar attendees will…
  • Explore the evolution of terminology such as Hispanic, Latino/a, Latinx, and Latine, and the historical and cultural contexts behind these terms.
  • Understand community preferences and diversity in terminology usage and the factors influencing these preferences.
  • Learn key considerations for using language that is inclusive, respectful, and resonates with the communities that researchers, practitioners, and organizations aim to serve.
Join us on January 28, from 1-2 p.m. EST; 2-3 p.m. AST.
We will offer simultaneous interpretation in Spanish
