Entre colegas... Dialogues between Behavioral Health Providers of Latinos

50 spaces available.

Do you provide behavioral health services to Latino populations as part of a community-based organization? Participating in these dialogues allows you to listen, converse, and learn more about effective and culturally informed practices with Latino populations. Along with colleagues and a guest specialist, you will discuss aspects that influence the behavioral health of Latino people as well as service models applicable to their well-being, including:

- Social determinants that affect behavioral health.

- Skills to foster participation, therapeutic relationships, and community outreach.

- Cultural elements that can be integrated into services and treatment plans

- Clinical presentations and best practices for conceptualizing and guiding services.

- Use of therapeutic approaches that are person-centered and strength-based.

This virtual activity is scheduled for the last week of each month, every other month. It will feature a guest specialist facilitating the discussion on a particular topic of Latino behavioral health.

Conversation about Eating Disorders among Men.

DESCRIPTION:

Eating disorders in boys and men have long been underrecognized, particularly among Latino populations, where cultural norms, male expectations, and systemic barriers intersect to obscure symptoms and delay treatment. This presentation examines current research and clinical insights into the unique presentation of eating disorders among Latino boys and men, including muscularity-oriented eating, body image dissatisfaction, and the influence of acculturation stress and machismo. Participants will learn how diagnostic criteria and traditional assessment tools—developed largely for females—often fail to capture the full spectrum of disordered eating behaviors in this population. Emphasis is placed on culturally and informed approaches to engagement, assessment, and intervention, integrating the latest evidence on ARFID, muscle dysmorphia, and compulsive exercise patterns in males. Through case examples and current data, attendees will explore strategies to improve detection, reduce stigma, and adapt evidence-based treatments such as CBT and nutrition therapy to the lived experiences of Latino boys and men. Ultimately, this session challenges clinicians to expand the narrative of who struggles with eating disorders and to deliver inclusive, affirming care that reflects cultural identity, and the evolving science of male eating disorders.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Identify key epidemiological patterns and diagnostic challenges associated with eating disorders in Latino boys and men, including differences in presentation, prevalence, and body image concerns compared to females.
  • Analyze the impact of male norms, cultural values, and systemic barriers (e.g., stigma, lack of culturally informed care) on help-seeking behavior and treatment engagement among Latino males.
  • Apply evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies—such as the use of male-specific screening tools and culturally responsive interventions—to improve detection, engagement, and recovery outcomes for Latino boys and men with eating disorders.
